‘Buffy’s Charisma Carpenter, Erik Estrada and Sir Mix-A-lot star in Butterfinger ad

'Buffy's Charisma Carpenter, Erik Estrada and Sir Mix-A-lot star in Butterfinder ad (Image provided by Nestle USA) Charisma Carpenter from the cult series Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Erik Estrada of the 1970s cop series CHiPs appear in a new commercial for the Butterfinger candy bar, during which they dance to a parody of the hit 1990s rap song “Baby Got Back” by Sir Mix-A-Lot, who also stars.

In the ad, Estrada, dressed in an officer’s uniform, while Carpenter, clad in a cheerleader outfit, bumps people away by shaking her behind.

Along with actor and bodybuilder Lou Ferrigno, they form the “Butterfinger Defense League”.

“I’m very sassy. I’m quick with the hips and the hair roll and the hair toss,” Carpenter said during a recent satellite press interview, before give a demonstration.

“They chose me because Cordelia on Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel – she’s sassy, she’s witty, she says what’s on her mind. She protects herself really well, so it makes sense that Butterfinger would sort of harness that within me to assist others on how to protect their Butterfingers,” she said

Buffy the Vampire Slayer ran from 1997 to 2003. Carpenter reprised her role on the Buffy spinoff Angel, which starred David Boreanaz of the current series Bones.

Charisma guest-starred several months ago on the action-fantasy series Legend of the Seeker and also has a role in the action thriller film The Expendables, which stars and is directed by Sylvester Stallone. The movie is set to be released in August.

The Big Tease: Scoop on Charisma Carpenter

Aww, I miss Queen C! Please tell me we’ll see Charisma Carpenter soon in something besides the Butterfinger campaign? – bethaseman via Twitter
On the small screen, CC is finishing talks to reprise her role of Omega Chi national rep Tegan Walker when ABC Family’s ‘Greek‘ returns for its fourth (and likely final) season later this year. “It looks like I am going back, yeah,” she tells me. “I love them over there!” She also has the films ‘The Expendables’ (August) and ‘Psychosis’ (Halloween) on the way.

Charisma Carpenter on how Cordelia Chase landed her in Stallone’s ‘Expendables’ (and The Butterfinger Defense League)

Charisma-Carptenter

Charisma Carpenter, best known as sharp-tongued Cordelia Chase on Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel, is still keeping company with people who could kick your ass. Together with Lou Ferrigno and Erik Estrada (pictured), she’s now a member of The Butterfinger Defense League, a trio that will teach us how to ward off people who want to lay a finger on our Butterfingers. They do this through individual training videos (Carpenter’s alter ego “Sassy” has killer hips) and a group remake of a certain Sir Mix-A-Lot hit (“I Like Big Butterfingers”). Watch her in action after the jump. She also plays Jason Statham’s fiancée in Sylvester Stallone’s The Expendables, which hits theaters in August. She stopped by my office last week to chat about which episode of Angel she showed Sly to help nab her rolethe joys of working with an army of sassy puppies (that would be the Butterfinger gig), why she’s a cool mom (her son, Donovan, is seven), and what she’d like to do next (Broadway!).

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: Did you have to read for Stallone?
CHARISMA CARPENTER:
Yeah, I had to earn it. I had to earn it big time. I think they were filming the process of making The Expendables, and so my audition and him telling me I got the part was all taped. First we met, and he said a lot of people were auditioning for the role but they were too tough. “I really want you to convey the softness, that you want to connect with this person.” He was talking about the scene, and I said, “I want to show you a scene I did with David in ‘You’re Welcome’ [the season 5 episode of Angel in which Cordelia dies]. The tenderness, I think I know exactly what you’re looking for. Wait, I’ll be back in 10 minutes. Donovan, come on.” ‘Cause I had to bring him that day. So they said, “You can leave Donovan here with us if it’ll make you go faster.” [Laughs] So I go, and I come back, and I show that scene at the end — the kiss when I leave — and he punches me in the arm like “Good job… But you still have to read though.” Then he called me in the middle of the afternoon, and I had my son again, and he said, “We were gonna have you come tonight and read for it,” and I went. The next day, I’m driving my kid to school, my hair is in a bun, I have no makeup on, Ugg boots, oversized jeans and like a thermal shirt, and I get this call from his assistant. “I have Sly for you.” Okay. He said, “We want you to come into the office right now.” “Um, okay, well, can I just have like a half an hour? Can I at least brush my teeth?” “No, we want you to come now.” So I call my manager, I’m like, “They want me to come now.” “I can’t believe they want you to come now. What if you didn’t get the job, and then they’re gonna tell you?” I’m like, “I don’t think he would do that.” I hang up and go in. Stallone’s like, “So, how do you think you did?” I’m like, “Well it really doesn’t matter how I think I did, it only matters what you think. How did I do?” He goes, “No, I want to know. How did you think you did?” And I said, “Well, I think I nailed it.” And he goes, “You did. You got the part.” And I went, “[Shouts] Yes!… Are you sh–in’ me right now? You’re not f—ing kidding me right now, right?” He said, “No, I’m dead serious.” I jumped up, and I gave him a big hug. It was the best news. For me, it’s like my first bona fide film that’s gonna see the masses. I’m thrilled. I don’t even want it to be over.

What was it like to be on that set?
I work in television, and it’s fast. I’d been on the set a long time ago of What’s Eating Gilbert Grape, and it was very slow and you take a lot of takes, from different angles, and I just thought, Ohmygod, this is my first big budget movie… No. It was faster than a TV show. It was constantly go, go, go. Minds were being changed on the fly, and you just have to acclimate. I was just really bummed that I didn’t get to kiss Jason more. “Really? You don’t want another take? Are you sure? You sure you got it?” And yeah [Laughs] a lot of Red Bull on set. A lot of Monster drinks for everybody. [Stallone's] like “You’re fading. You’re fading. I can see it in your eyes. Here, take this.” “Okay. Sure, I’ll have another one.” It was fast and furious, and I don’t know how he does what he does. I don’t know how he’s been around for so long. I get it —  because he’s a genius and he wears a lot of hats — but I can’t believe he’s physically been able to do it this long.

Charisma Carpenter Talks The Butterfly Defence League

For seven years Charisma Carpenter was a crucial cog in the epic fight against vampires, demons and the forces of evil on “Buffy The Vampire Slayer” and “Angel.” Now she’s taking the ass-kicking skills absorbed during her time as Cordelia to chase away a new, potentially more dangerous foe: candy thieves.

Yes, the war against those who seek to lay a finger on your Butterfinger just got three new allies, as Lou “Hulk” Ferrigno, Erik Estrada and Charisma founded The Butterfinger Defense League.

And while everyone waits with baited (chocolate-laced) breath for her debut Defense video, PopWrap chatted with Charisma about a couple other hot topics. Notably her time in the Scooby-Gang, a possible reunion with Joss Whedon and making out with Jason Statham.

PopWrap: Had did you come to join the Butterfinger Defense League?
Charisma Carpenter: They were looking to form this League with people who have defended evil in some way in pop culture – so they approached me, and I I love Butterfinger, so I was totally in! Then I read the script and loved how tongue in cheek it was. The only thing I said was, “do I have to wear a cheerleader uniform again?”

PW: And how exactly does this sassy lil’ puppy brigade factor in?
Charisma: Oh man, we filmed this video where I get to be like Lady GaGa. It’s a riff on “Bad Romance” with the white room and I have a bevy of puppies that help me out with their sass. I can’t even tell you how funny it is.

PW: Since you’re a candy spokesperson now, I wonder what kind of treats you hand out on Halloween — full-sized bars?
Charisma: I am not a full-sized giver outer. I do the bite size. I have a kid and I think they just like a taste. Some moderation.

PW: Will it be all Butterfingers all the time at your house now?
Charisma: Now that I have a lifetime supply of Butterfingers, I’ll probably try and pawn some off so I don’t gain 300 pounds myself and lose this campaign [laughs]. There’s no way if I eat all those Butterfingers I will still be repping the brand.

PW: Yeah, they might not ask you to put the cheerleader costume on again.
Charisma: [laughs] I’m thinking no.

Charisma Carpenter, Erik Estrada and Lou Ferrigno: The New Butterfinger Defense League

Hollywood’s Charisma Carpenter, Erik Estrada and Lou Ferrigno are sizzling, sculpted Butterfinger die hards…reporting for Butterfinger Defense League duty! In response to the thousands of Butterfinger heists across the country, the three fearless personalities combined battle forces to create the League to safeguard Butterfingers from candy bandits. Don’t mess. They partnered up with Sir Mix-a-Lot (all hail Mack Daddy) and voila, the freakishly funny ”Baby Got It Back” video, showcasing their trademark Butterfinger defense moves, was born. Hit it.

Check out more of the all star defenders Charisma (Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel star/vampire slayer vixen), Erik (America’s favorite officer aka star of CHiPs) and Lou (The Incredible Hulk and Mr. Universe – take that!
MM: How did you prep for the revamped “Baby Got It Back” video?
Charisma Carpenter: I used to cheer and have a dance background. I pretty much took it to the pro level for a minute. There was a choreographer at the shoot and we went into a side room real quick to rehearse. Then I went into hair and make up and then I danced!

MM: In the heat of the moment, how would you defend your Butterfinger?
CC: Uh hello, attitude and sass. Push’em away! A little hip check. My son is constantly trying to get my Butterfinger. I tell him ‘Get your own!’ Actually, its really me trying to get a bite of his.

MM: You’ve had a wildly successful career. What have you learned about Hollywood? CC:As I get older and look back, I think I could have been more social. Relationships are so important in the industry. Schmoozing, clubbing, friends. I’m not good at it. I don’t know if “loner” is the right word but I’m a free spirit. Working on shoots and acting and being in New York, that is the fun stuff. After that’s over  though I’m really mellow. I go to the gym. I’m a mom.

MM: Give us the Sly details about your role in the hotly anticipated Sly Stallone movie, The Expendables.
CC: It was interesting. I thought movies were slow, maybe that is the case, but in Sylvester’s world its snap, crackle, pop. We beat the sun coming up and going down. It was exhilarating and terrifying. Kissing Jason wasn’t a bad gig either.
MM note: Oh and by ‘Jason’, Charisma is referring to Jason Statham. Ja-ja-ja-jealous much?
